Mundane item (homebrew), requires proficiency with Smith’s Tools.
Just as any other tool, a sharp edged blade requires regular maintenance. The gunk and dried up blood from cutting those monster bowels has to be cleaned off, the edge requires regular sharpening and maintenance, and the steel greatly benefits from the regular application of a thin layer of oil to prevent rust formation. But what am I telling you this for. If you know how to use this strop, you already know more about blade maintenance than most adventurers do.
Using this strop you can bring the edge to a mirror finish. The supple leather side will set the edge and remove any burrs. The soft hairs on the other side will gently caress the blade to get the the shiniest of shines and removes any microscopic scratches to reach that true mirror shine. Be aware though, your blade will be sharper than ever, but this razor edge and the mirror finish don’t last long.
Mechanics:
If you spend one hour honing your blade using this strop, you gain two Sharpness Dice (d4).
When you make a melee weapon attack, you may add a Sharpness Die to the Attack Roll. On a hit your attack deals additional damage equal to the rolled value. The die is expended with the attack roll and can only be regained by resharpening your blade.
Nota bene: this is a homebrew item. Additional balancing may proof necessary during play.
